  10.  AB    Opportunistic and bacterial infections remain the leading causes of
  11.        death of Human Immunodeficiency Virus-infected children, despite recent
  12.        advances in the diagnosis of HIV infection during early infancy;
  13.        antiretroviral therapies; advances in the treatment of some infections;
  14.        an improved understanding of the cellular immune systems during early
  15.        childhood; and new strategies for the prevention of some infections.
  16.        However, these advances appear to be changing the natural history of
  17.        pediatric HIV infection, resulting in an improved and longer life for
  18.        infected children. This article briefly reviews the epidemiology,
  19.        predictors, and treatments of the most common infections associated with
  20.        pediatric HIV disease, including Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia,
  21.        recurrent bacterial infections, candidiasis, herpes group viruses,
  22.        mycobacterial disease and cryptosporidiosis.
